Question 1: Do you have a pre-show ritual: week before, day before, day of?
I have a few! For 30 days prior I limit sugar and inflammatory foods, no alcohol, and I up the water! Working with a severely torn shoulder this show I started this prep in December to help my recovery, so it’s been over 100 days! On show day, I blast Beyonce while doing my hair and makeup, go for an ocean swim, and practice meditation.
Question 2: What is your favourite show youāve performed in with Broken Rhythms?
That’s impossible to answer! Each show provides a new lens to look through, and allows me to explore a new part of artistry. As the style continues to develop I am also finding new pathways to move into. This show I’m working with an injury and last show I was recovering from a leg surgery, that really pushed me to utilize different parts of my artistic and physical expression. These last two shows were the most interesting for me because of this.
Question 3: Has BR/rhythmical contemporary changed or influenced the way you move in other modalities, ie yoga, tap etc ?
I think each new movement pattern triggers some new pathway or response on a physiological level, as well as emotional. All of my modalities influence one another. For me, I typically have 3 lines of thought at all times, so during a show I use mathematics to help my brain focus on one item. I’ll number the movement patterns, count the music, and number the pathways. Dyana’s company was the first place I was able to actually be open about my fun and quirky brain, and this has really allowed me to better understand my way of thinking as a mover. My yoga practice has helped me stay grounded and this influences my approach to the work greatly.
