Using Broken Rhythms signature movement style, RhythmicalContemporary, Knotted weaves together the ups, downs and arounds of the body in motion and the societal invisibility that comes from experiencing life with chronic pain.

Choreographer and Artistic Director of Broken Rhythms, Dyana Sonik-Henderson has been experiencing chronic pain since the age of 12. She wanted to engage in a dialogue with multiple artists to reflect on the ‘body of knowledge’ they hold when dancing with pain. Through this process it came to the group’s realization that many people could relate to this theme and that a large portion of the population are experiencing some sort of constant/chronic pain.

Knotted is also a special show as it marks a jump in theatre size and seats. Broken Rhythms premiered its first work in a 50 seat theatre, then moved to a 180 seat theatre to now for the first time a 700+ seat theatre (McPherson).

Since 2011 Broken Rhythms has been creating unique and original dance productions in the dance style Rhythmical Contemporary that have performed all across Canada. Some of the most well know works include Chiaro:Scuro, SEVEN and the next touring show 1,000 pieces of π. They have been awarded nine Pick of the Fringe awards, named as one of Toronto Star’s “can’t miss shows” and received the LOLA International Project Award.
