Broken Rhythms Dance Company

Broken Rhythms Victoria Society is a Victoria-based registered not-for-profit contemporary dance company founded in 2011 under the artistic direction of Dyana Sonik-Henderson. The company was established to create and present original contemporary dance works rooted in the movement language of Rhythmical Contemporary, while providing meaningful performance, training, and creative opportunities for artists on Vancouver Island and across Canada.

Dedicated to fostering the next generation of dance artists, Broken Rhythms creates pathways for emerging and established performers through professional productions, workshops, residencies, and the Broken Rhythms Contemporary Training Program (BRCTP). The company is committed to making contemporary dance more accessible while strengthening Canada’s independent dance community through collaboration, mentorship, and artistic innovation.

Since its inception, Broken Rhythms has created and toured numerous original productions, including SPARK, GRIM, SEVEN, Universal Horrors, Thyself, Internal Rhythms, Into the Wire, 1,000 Pieces of ∏, Above Me, Chiaro:Scuro, Knotted, and On Hold. The company’s work has been presented across Canada and featured at festivals including Dancing on the Edge in Vancouver.

Broken Rhythms has received widespread recognition for its artistic excellence, earning nine Pick of the Fringe Awards, being named by the Toronto Star as one of the “can’t miss shows” at the Toronto Fringe Festival, receiving the LOLA International Project Award, and securing support from organizations including the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council, and the Capital Regional District.

Today, Broken Rhythms continues to push the boundaries of contemporary dance through bold, rhythm-driven performance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to cultivating a vibrant and sustainable future for dance in British Columbia and beyond.
