Candace (She/They) is a performer and educator based on the unceded, ancestral territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. As a professional dancer, Candace has worked internationally for companies such as Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Disney Cruise Line, Nickelodeon, and Netflix, where she gained valuable experience working with different contemporary and commercial dance approaches. She began creating with Broken Rhythms in 2020 and has been a proud company member ever since, performing in several shows including 1000 Pieces of Pi (2021, 2022), Above Me (2022), and Chiaro: Scuro (2023). In addition to performing in the company’s latest work, Knotted, Candace is thrilled to be stepping into the role of guest choreographer!
Question: What was your biggest surprise or discovery during the choreography process for Knotted?
I was surprised by the evolution of the piece as I uncovered it. I began creating this work while unravelling my own relationship with pain and dance and where those things intersect. Originally, I saw the piece as having a melancholy, heavy tone throughout, as reflected by the movements you’ll see at the beginning of the piece. By the end of the process, with the support of Dyana and the BR company dancers, I saw it in a whole new light. I realized the power of witnessing and experiencing the full spectrum of emotions. That strength guided the process and revealed what I see as a story of resilience.
