DANCE BY NUMBERS IS A PIECE OF π/Pi AT WINNIPEG FRINGE

The never-ending and never repetitive number sequence known as π is now a dance production even math phobics will love. In the mind-bending and entertaining dance production “1,000 Pieces of Pi,” Victoria-based Broken Rhythms performs only 10 different moves with each move representing a different decimal in the irrational, never-ending number commonly written as 3.14. The dancers aim to perform the first 1,000 numbers of π in under 50 minutes.

“It challenges the dancers’ memories and their bodies in a way most choreography doesn’t,” says Broken Rhythms artistic director and “Pi” creator Dyana Sonik-Henderson. Throughout the performance, she tabulates the dancers’ numerical and timed progress onstage on a flip chart. “I’m neurodiverse and the show grew out of my effort to use my dance skills to help me focus on my graduate studies. I wondered what a production of moves reflecting numbers would look like.”

Audience response to “1,000 Pieces of Pi” has been uniformly enthusiastic. It won the “Pick of the Fringe” at the Victoria Fringe Festival 2022 and their homage to film noir, Chiaro:Scuro, won Pick of the Fringe in 2023. Broken Rhythms productions in their rhythmical contemporary style are perpetual favourites and have been lauded as “genius” by their audiences. Broken Rhythms performed their most recent production, “Knotted,” in Victoria’s grand McPherson Theatre in response to growing audience demand.
